There are many different types of headaches. At the clinic, we focus on cervicogenic headaches and migraines; both of these can be debilitating, particularly if you are a frequent headache sufferer.
What is happening?
Cervicogenic headaches are linked to neck tension and muscle spasm, you will often feel pain in the base of the head and across the top of the eyes. Migraines can be with visual changes (with aura) or without visual changes. It is typical to experience light sensitivity as well as nausea, in addition to severe throbbing pain on one side of the head.
Key aggravating factors
Sleeping with more than one pillow or with a pillow that isn’t giving you enough support is a factor in causing neck stiffness and tension. Often with headaches, they are caused by multiple factors that result in the neck getting tighter and tighter causing the headache. Other factors include stress, carrying a bag on one shoulder, poor desk and chair set up at work.

Chiropractic quick tips
Sleep with a single pillow which supports your head in line with the rest of your body.
Regularly get up and move at work to reduce tension build up.
Stretch the neck and shoulders regularly particularly the pectoral muscles.
Chiropractic can help!
We improve the mechanical function of the neck, reducing tight joints and muscles, easing stress tension, and encouraging full comfortable range of movement. This stops the muscles and joints sending pain into the head, therefore reducing the headaches. We can also give advice and lifestyle changes to help reduce repetitive tension build up and headache frequency.
